April 4, 2006 Timber packaging at Australia

Dear Customers,

Timber packaging treatment requirement Australia will implement mandatory treatment requirements for all wood packaging materials arriving in the country from May 1, 2006.

To date, the risks associated with timber packaging in break-bulk and air cargo shipments have been managed through surveillance, with only those found to be contaminated or infested requiring treatment.

For some time, however, mandatory treatment requirements have been applied to a timber packaging imported in FCL and LCL containers.

After May 1 2006, imported solid timber arriving in Australia by airfreight and in break-bulk consignments must be treated in accordance with AQIS requirements. If it is not, the material will be directed at the importer's expense for either:
- Mandatory onshore treatment
- Re-export
- Destruction
